Vonnegut said, "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be." What we pretend to be—even curate, I think—is our digital selves. The way we present that digital self is, very often, through branding (whether we like it or not). Combine this with how much ProfHackers write about websites and it brings us to our topic for today.

The most public-facing and easily accessible version of your digital self is, unsurprisingly, your own website. It can serve as your testing ground, your central communication hub, your home base. So, be honest: how is it? Was it hastily done a few years ago? Did the department make one for you? Is it a WordPress blog you update once a year or so? Are you getting anxious just thinking about it after reading this? Stay the course. This will help if you want to improve it but don't know where to begin.

While doing some related research for a curriculum refresh I ran across this neat little (medium sized?) usability/user experience website checklist. It's simple, straight-forward, and covers the majority of elements on nearly any website. For the kinds of websites I'm talking about there are elements in the checklist that are absolutely overkill ("transparent pricing" probably doesn't apply to you, for example) so those items can simply be skipped over.

At any rate, it's worth taking half an hour or so and doing a quick scan of your site to see just how many of these you can faithfully check off. If you haven't touched your site in a few years except to update your CV page, this may serve as a nice little guide. It's a good time to start adding links in your Publications section of your CV to the websites of those journals/proceedings/etc. One thing at a time, though, I suppose. I should mention in fairness that I don't think your website is the only way your digital self is presented—obviously your body of work is paramount—but it certainly is the easiest and fastest for most people. (Add some analytics to your site and start checking how people get there; dollars to donuts it's via a search engine that rhymes with Moogle.)

Do you put an emphasis on your digital presence via your website? Do you even have one? Are you adding this to your summer to-do list? Let us know in the comments!
