One of my goals is to find balance, particularly between wellness, writing goals, and I've turned to tech to get a sense of whether I'm succeeding. However, a few months ago I made the transition back to Android phones after years of iPhone usage, which has required rebuilding my app workflow for just about everything. Here's the apps that I am finding essential for summer – all work well on Android, and several make particularly good use of Android's widgets for continual monitoring, though most have iOS versions available: - SaveMyTime (Android). I've tried time-tracking before and I never stick with it long, but SaveMyTime takes one extra button push every time I unlock my phone and has been giving me a much better sense of how I spend my day for very little effort. The free version allows for tracking nine categories, which gives space for granular-level work tracking (I like to differentiate between teaching, service, and research tasks) as well as exercise, sleep, chores, and other life tasks. I'm looking forward to having enough data to get a better sense of where my balance is lacking.
- Vora (iOS and Android). There's lots of debate on the value of intermittent fasting. I won't weigh in on the science, but I find committing to an evening fast valuable for resisting the temptation to eat junk food at night. Vora is my favorite app for tracking time fasting because it's very simple: set a goal in hours for time spent fasting, and it provides a stopping time. The visualization of bar charts over time is easy to read and use.
- HabitHub (Android, iOS coming soon). I think I've tried every habit-tracking app on iOS and Android every year, and this is my current favorite. Much as I'd love to be a fan of the complex gamified model of apps like ChoreWars and Habitica, at the end of the day what I'm really looking for is a reminder of my daily priorities. I use Android widgets to keep my current daily goals visible on my phone, and it's been an effective way to resist too much time on Twitter in favor of something better aligned with my summer priorities.
- Plant Nanny (iOS and Android). Of all the health apps I use, this is the most adorable. The premise is simple: record water drinking and by doing so "water" cute plants that become part of a virtual garden. It gives me slightly nightmarish flashbacks to Tamagotchi – yes, you can kill your virtual plants – but the interface is simple and the visualization is effective.
Some of my favorite technologies from summers past have become essential: my Garmin Forerunner 235 only leaves my wrist for charging, and the combination of the always-visible step counter and tracking of resting heartrate and sleep has given me some useful insight into my best (and worst) habits. After two years of obsessive use I can say it's the only fitness tracker (or even watch) that has ever stuck for me. What are your favorite apps for summer wellness?
