Ah, break. It's that time of year when the responsibilities are few, the free time is vast, and for a starry-eyed academic everything seems possible. We're all greeted at one time or another with the age-old question: "What're you going to do with all that free time?" How to cope with this abundance of temporal freedom has been written about here at ProfHacker before, of course. George suggested "resting and recharging" while Anastasia shared some insights on how she stays "sane and productive" during this time. Natalie even provides a list of questions to ask yourself to gauge just how that work/life balance might look.
In an attempt to determine just how I'd do this for myself I decided to focus on four areas during all that free time (beyond home- and family-related things): teaching, reading, writing, and self-care. Upon reflection, the items I began adding to these categories seemed potentially overly ambitious and, following the advice of my fellow ProfHackers, I decided to keep things realistic.
So, what I ended up with was a bit different: lists of what I want to do, what I should do, and what I probably will do. Then I decided to throw in a practical tool or some other advice so I could share at least something useful.
Teaching
What I want to do: re-craft all my assignments and lectures into flowing rivers of perfectly understood, pure educational bliss.
What I should do: ensure URLs aren't broken, update dated material, make changes based on reflection, and take care of logistics like creating discussion rooms and updating syllabi so I'm not crunched before the semester begins.
What I probably will do: spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to automate all that in an LMS that isn't made for it, curse at my computer, and then do it manually, anyway.
What can be done: spend some time working on future-proofing the content of your classes using your own Semantic MediaWiki (series on doing just this coming soon!).
Reading
What I want to do: get through the stack of novels I've been meaning to chew on that just seems to keep getting bigger.
What I should do: get through the mountain of articles I've been meaning to chew on that just seems to keep getting bigger.
What I probably will do: stare at TweetDeck.
What can be done: utilize one of the many reading strategies out there like Raul Pacheco-Vega's AIC method to get through the backlog of readings you've accumulated over the semester.
Writing
What I want to do: get up every morning, make a beautiful carafe of freshly ground pour-over coffee, sit by the fire with my laptop, and chug out a few thousand words of fresh, innovative, brilliant new work.
What I should do: get up every morning, make a single cup of really good coffee (just the one), move to my office where my productivity is highest, and finish one of a gajillion "in progress" projects that I promised myself I'd finish in the fall.
What I probably will do: get up most mornings, make a giant pot of mediocre coffee, sit up in bed with my laptop, drink all the coffee, and spend my time preparing to write rather than actually writing.
What I want to do: exercise and explore by jumping on my bicycle and riding the loop near our new place.
What I should do: actually use the gym membership for which I'm currently paying.
What I probably will do: walk one of the dogs and wear that like a badge, allowing me to justify "overdoing it" at the holiday dinner table.
What can be done: identify what makes you happy and healthy. Make–don't find–time to do that thing. Do that thing. Repeat.
As this break rushes up to meet you and you're greeted with the whooshing sound of it flying by, I hope you have a productive and enjoyable end of the semester and calendar year. Here's to an even more productive and enjoyable spring!
What about you? Do you have lists of things you want, should, and will probably do over break, either satirical or sincere? Share them in the comments or tweet them at me (@ryanstraight) and the rest of the @profhacker team!
