Overcast.fm for listening to podcasts Heather M. Whitney The internet has exploded with podcasts, with so many great options out there. (ProfHacker even got in on the trend for awhile!) Here at ProfHacker, we have had several open thread posts about podcasts and podcast apps. Selection and management of their use can almost be overwhelming. In this post in 2014, Jason mentioned that he uses Overcast to listen to podcasts. Below, I'd like to expand a description of that app and also list additional features now available. This fall, I began commuting a few days a week to a research site that required a hour-long commute one way on the best of traffic days and a two hour commute one way on the worst of days. So it was very natural to put a bit more thought into my podcast list and find an app that played them well. For quite some time I just stuck with the podcast app that comes with Apple's iOS. But then, in September 2017, the app underwent a relaunch, not for the better, in my opinion. I found it really hard to make sure a playlist was going to play smoothly through with no intervention from me. Other features, such as the sleep timer, became much more difficult to use. So I put out a plea to Twitter for podcast player app recommendations, and the app Overcast.fm was mentioned several times. And so far, it has lived up to expectations. You will want to check out the site so that you can read full descriptions of all the features, but here are a few points about what has been particularly helpful to me: The design is simple and straightforward. You can set up smart playlists that include a subset of the podcasts to which you subscribe, and on top of that, prioritize a subset of that subset. I have made one of these specifically for my long commute days. I love the smart playlist because I have a few shorter podcasts that I want to make sure I get in each week during my drives, but I still want the other ones to play if there is time. You don't have to worry about whether or not your podcast will be available to add to your account in Overcast.fm. If the podcast is available on iTunes, it will be shortly on Overcast. I don't know how I previously listened to podcasts without the features of Smart Speed and Voice Boost that are part of Overcast.fm. Smart Speed reduces silences and Voice Boost normalizes sound levels. (There is much more detail about these particular features, and more, at The Sweet Setup.) The app is currently reporting to me that the shortened silences have saved me 26 minutes after just a few weeks' use of the app, and the normalization of sound is very helpful as I move through stop and go traffic. The app is available for free, but you can also subscribe to a paid version that reduces ads (although I haven't been bothered by them at all) and supports the good work of the developer. I highly recommend that you look into using Overcast.fm for podcast listening management. What do you use to manage the podcasts you listen to? Let us know in the comments.
