Happy World Password Day! Jason B. Jones Today is World Password Day, the annual celebration where we gather in city centers, village squares, and college quads to share one another's passwords and move forward to a glorious world of friction-free information sharing. No. Apparently that's not right. World Password Day is a recent-ish awareness day that's designed to get people to be a little bit more thoughtful about the passwords/passcodes/passphrases/PINs they use to secure their digital existence. Given the innumerable accounts that one has to sign up for these days, it's easy to feel overwhelmed at the prospect of giving each one a distinctive, impossible to guess and too-much-hassle to break password. The solution is simple: password manager. (Your college's IT department might even offer one!) Services such as 1Password, Lastpass, and Dashlane will help you generate as many passwords as you need, and will keep track of them for you. For all three, all you have to remember is a single password, which then gives you access to all the others. My favorite password advice of all time comes from Natalie Houston, who recommends using a "positive password" as your master password, to give yourself a little affirmation throughout the day.
